ABOUT US

Thank you for your interest in Asha for Education here at Michigan State University!

Asha for Education is a secular organization dedicated to socio-economic change in India. In pursuit of this goal, Asha focuses on basic education for children. The basis of this pursuit is the firm belief that an educated population is a critical prerequisite as well as an effective catalyst for social and economic change in India.

We, at Michigan State University, make up just one chapter of Asha for Education, a non-profit voluntary organization dedicated to increasing literacy among children in India.  Asha was started in 1991 when its founding chapter was formed at the University of California in Berkeley to promote basic education for poor and underprivileged children in India.  Since then, it has grown in strength and number, and today Asha for Education has over 66 chapters worldwide, including 45 in the U.S. and 14 in India.

Asha for Education at MSU was formed in September 1999 by a diverse group of students and faculty members from MSU and the Greater Lansing area.  The aim of the group is to mobilize the local population to collectively support and provide financial assistance to grass-roots level education movements in India.

To maximize effectiveness of its efforts, Asha for Education at MSU seeks to support educational projects in rural and economically backward areas. Members of Asha attempt to maintain a close personal involvement with the organizations and projects that are sponsored.

The group is steadily growing. As our numbers increase, we are better able to distribute tasks amongst informal focus groups to execute different facets of the chapter.

Asha for Education at MSU is a non-profit voluntary organization. It does not have any political or religious affiliations. All administrative expenses are met by the core volunteers. 100% of your donations contribute towards supporting Asha for Education’s projects in India.

We have funded two projects to date and have a few more that we are interested in sponsoring. If you would like to contribute in effort, kind or cash, contact Megha Patel at patelme8@msu.edu
